Encyclopaedia Britannica
Challenge
Encyclopaedia Britannica is world's most respected and premiere knowledge and digital
information source on every topic imaginable.
The existing web site was cluttered and lacked consistency from one page to the next.
There was no navigation facility from the detail page and the site was generally very difficult to
navigate.
The content structure was also unacceptable and had been created using static web pages.
Solution
To modernise the look and feel of the site for 1999 Dinosaur campaigns and to enhance the
company's image as the most trusted source of information, worldwide.
To provide customers with a site that would be visually appealing, increase their experience, and be
easy to use and navigate. The sourcing of information in a timely manner, was also an important
priority.
Working closely with Encyclopaedia Britannica, Elixir Solutions Provider developed a worldwide corporate image, rather
than the previous differing look from one country to another. This was achieved through use of a
standard template throughout the site creating a consistent look and feel which was not in evidence
previously.
The site was made easier to navigate by use of colour coding and the logical grouping of
information. This provided the user with the opportunity to type in a question and have the search
result returned directly. The creation of an online product registration page negated the previous
requirement for Britannica data entry staff to re-enter information from the registration form.
Instant Research was added to the website enabling the user to obtain an article and immediately
display it on the web site. This search of IRS database enabled information to be retrieved in
seconds, rather than days. Using the old system, Britannica would send a printed copy of the article
to the user, which was both old fashioned and labour costly.
E-commerce was another useful feature added, and to maintain and update the content on a regular
basis access was given to Britannica through a backend database.
Results
The new web site is a joy to use as navigation is easy and information quick to retrieve. The new
colour coded navigation system has made this a reality. Users are able to obtain the information
they require in seconds rather than days, as previously.
The product registration process is now up-to-date and Britannica is achieving a steady and ongoing
increase in orders on their new web site, while at the same time enjoying considerable cost saving
benefits.
